Bar Review - Marz Bar: The last dive of old New York

by Darren Subarton

2nd Avenue and East1st

If Satan were a whore of a bar, that bar would appear in the form of Marz Bar. Marz Bar, located on the corner of 2nd Avenue and East1st Street in Manhattan, is perhaps the best place to blow your unemployment check any day of the week before noon, or after a good parole hearing.

A denizen of artists, drunks, freaks, junkies and musicians, Marz Bar boasts an incredible juke box that is only surpassed by the graffiti-ridden ambiance of a Bukowski-esque dive bar of twilight days gone by. The drinks are served cheap and with a heavy hand from bartenders half-drunk, and it’s as commonplace for a drunk to lift his sleeping head from the bar to “Ring of Fire” as it is to see a hooker beat the living hell out of some pimple-faced jag-off from New Jersey.

I give Marz Bar the “Getting Shithouse With Subarton” five-star review.
