Bruce Beck grew up in Burlington, North Carolina, and earned a B.A. from Wake
Forest University and the M.A. from Northwestern University, both in theatre. He has
taught cooking at The New School, Peter Kumps School of Culinary Arts, and other
area schools for more than fifteen years.
Bruce is the author of PRODUCE: A FRUIT AND VEGETABLE LOVERS GUIDE (Friendly Press,
1984), which was called gorgeous by The New York Times,
and the most spectacular food book of the year by The Boston Globe.
Later he wrote THE OFFICIAL FULTON FISH MARKET COOKBOOK (E.P. Dutton, 1989), which was
called an absolute must by A.J. McClane, and a
treasure by Irene Sax of Newsday. Bruce has also contributed
to THE EATING WELL COOKBOOK (Camden House, 1991) and Eating Wells
RECIPE RESCUE COOKBOOK (Camden House,1993) and has written for Food &
Wine, Eating Well, Cooking Light, and Seafood Business.
Bruce has made a number of media appearances including the Regis Philbins Morning
Show and In Food Today with Donna Hanover and David
Rosengarten. He has worked in a wide variety of other food related areas, including recipe
development and food styling for photography. He is currently developing new desserts for
a catering company in New York City. Recently in The New York Times
Florence Fabricant called his work first-rate, and Eric Asimov called it
fabulous.
Bruce is also a photographer, and had a one-man show of his work in Manhattan in 1995
called FACES OF MEXICO. In his spare time he collects fine menswear and Mexican silver.
